VRR finally landed! Can't wait to not have to keep updating mutter-vrr from the AUR to enjoy games on GNOME! GNOME's VRR implementation has been way better than KDE's in my experience using the patched mutter.

Whilst I am in agreement with the statement, who wouldn't be? I would like to know what is the software that is being funded by tax payers that is sold back to tax payers. This is new to me and raises lots of questions.
we should probably ask why meds aren't free or cheap before we think about software. Tax dollars also goes to the research on meds.
Back in the day you couldn't use public money and then get a patent because the patent became "public domain" so what companies would do is use the grant money and then sell and the buyer could then patent.
I can answer that. Because public institutions work on the lowest bidder principle. The lowest bidder will hide their code so only they can conduct maintenance and development, and hang on to the option of reselling the components in other projects having developed them with the public money. That way they superficially appear cheaper than an Open system but end up making a bigger profit.
Look up Simtel, it was nearly perfect. NASA shares out public software created on the people's dime. There are conservatives who want the government to control anything made using their (taxpayers) money. They don't get it, and don't want to.

Previously it involved retyping a phone number or creating a group and scanning a group QR code as a workaround.
I’m curious about the wording „a username“ does that mean we may expect multiple usernames that can be created and deleted as liked in the future? The current UI does only seem to be focused on one Username. 🙁

I have two reasons that I do not use signal.
1. You require my phone number. You do not need my personal identifying information. As long as you require information about me that you do not need, I will not trust that you are as secure as you claim to be.
2. You do not use a federated system. If I could set up my own signal server and communicate with friends on your server, I would be more willing to trust the end to end encryption.

I hope this changes in the future. Today with the beta the group chats I'm in still exposes the phone number of people in the group. Only displaying/using the username would be more privacy focused.

finally! I immediately hid my number on Telegram when that feature went live there. Just hoping that Signal also allows registration without us giving our number.

it seems you have not publicly documented how the usernames feature works in terms of the back-end.
If the Feds subpoena Signal with a username, what data will they get from you? Will they get the user’s phone number? In reverse, if the Feds subpoena a phone number, will they get the associated username? What about one’s history of numbers/usernames?

It was a long time coming, but we are all very glad it's finally here.
After years of waiting for this feature, I am forced to use a number next to my username so other people can have the same username, just with a slightly different number next to it? I am not happy with such a mess. I am sad.

- I don't understand what threat model this is based on. Even if you use a username, your phone number will be shown to any other party to chat who already has that number in their contacts. But what if you don't want to reveal that the username you are using corresponds to a phone number they know? I want a user-selected handle that doesn't require a smartphone to create or use and isn't linked to any phone number.
Wait, does this mean you finally don't announce to absolutely everyone who has my number that I just installed Signal?
Because for a privacy focused app, that always seemed like a gross violation of basic privacy.

I've used Signal continuously with several contacts since about 2021 (?). I like the fact that we've progressed.

and yes, it is. Glad Signal got it worked out. It's a great benefit, IMO, and I'm proud of the team for getting it done.

My impression was the announcement on Didthis wasn't fully baked, linking essays but no quick video demo or example projects (easy to find on discord) - news writers and commenters would have something to chew on.
Even if concept and implementation turn out great, users should ask for a commitment to make it available long term when coming to rely on it. Good Luck
