3. You can enable a new, optional privacy setting to require people to connect with you via username instead of phone number
Finally users can establish a contact by scanning QR codes.
Previously it involved retyping a phone number or creating a group and scanning a group QR code as a workaround.
1. You require my phone number. You do not need my personal identifying information. As long as you require information about me that you do not need, I will not trust that you are as secure as you claim to be.
2. You do not use a federated system. If I could set up my own signal server and communicate with friends on your server, I would be more willing to trust the end to end encryption.
does it work on linux yet without creating a million sandboxes for itself and eventually running the system out of memory?
it's done this on everyplatform ive thrown it on.
one other thing: do i still need a phone # to sign up? i dont use a smartphone anymore.

How will you ensure people don’t have a false sense of privacy, if an old Signal version will still show the phone number?

it seems you have not publicly documented how the usernames feature works in terms of the back-end.
If the Feds subpoena Signal with a username, what data will they get from you? Will they get the user’s phone number? In reverse, if the Feds subpoena a phone number, will they get the associated username? What about one’s history of numbers/usernames?

It was a long time coming, but we are all very glad it's finally here.
Wait, does this mean you finally don't announce to absolutely everyone who has my number that I just installed Signal?
Because for a privacy focused app, that always seemed like a gross violation of basic privacy.
I look forward to trying it in about 3 or 4 months.

I've used Signal continuously with several contacts since about 2021 (?). I like the fact that we've progressed.
